Final Scream

The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan knows so-called alternative rock died with Kurt Cobain, he just wants the final scream. He gets it on "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"(virgin), a 120-minute, two-disk opus that takes the listener on a wild ride of rock---from Moody Blues lush arrangements("Tonight, Tonight") to Black Sabbath dinosaur metal ("Zero","X.Y.U.") to Pink Floyd acid rock ("Galapogos").

What ties it all together is a good helping of Pumpkins' patented sonic-boom punk and psychedelia. Interspersed are ballads, acoustic forays, folk and country-inspired tunes that show Corgan indeed has come into his own as a songwriter.
