RAGE TRANSCRIPT - By Mike Roach
This transcript is from May, when Pumpkins toured Australia. RAGE is a pretty raw sort of video show, unlike some of America's glossy slick magazine style programs. It's on public TV in Australia. This will probably never be repeated in full ever again. So here it is. D'arcy and James went into the video archives and chose 40 or so videos to play. They did introductions for the ones they wanted to, and every one is typed out in full here. They played other videos and are also listed here. I don't list the one's they mention in full when they give the intro. I said this is a must read transcript because if your a real pumpkins fan you'll want to know what influenced the band. Hope you like it. -Mike Roach
D'ARCY: This is The Jesus & Mary Chain, You Trip Me Up, from Psycho Candy. My all time favorite album. I used to arobecize to this album, it's um...
JAMES: I can vouch for that
D'ARCY: amazing. And probably al lot of you younger kids out there don't know it, so, I think you should get to know it.
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Sometimes Always
Sebadoh - Skull
JAMES: OK, this next video is The Bee Gees, More Than A Woman, now I've never seen this video but I love this song.
D'ARCY: You know what. They say that everyone says that. Everyone comes on and says that they never saw the video before so.
JAMES: Well, I don't care, I've never seen this show before. So anyways [laughs][loud noise] Oh wait, I'm getting a thought about this Bee Gees song. I just want you to know [noise goes] OK. My thought is that when this videos playing, just remember I'm dancing. I'm dancing the night away and your all lovin' it [james sings the pre-chorus part from the song in high pitch]
D'ARCY: James, James. If your gonna embarrass me I can't do this.
Grand Master Flash & Mellie Mel - White Lines
My Bloody Valentine - TO Here Knows When
JAMES: Ah, The Beatles, The Fool On The Hill. Great song from The Magical Mystery Tour, and ah, I guess, what I know about this video is that it was a mate of Paul's, and him and Paul were hanging in France, and they shot this sought of moviesque kind of video, and ah, basically I like it because, he just looks so happy. He's on a hill, he's the fool. He's in The Beatles. And just watch him when he smiles, it's like hey, I'm crazy, I just wrote Sgt. Peppers.
The Beatles - I am The Walrus (From The Video)
George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace (Got to say that this song is an
absolute shocker. I shudder when I think of the song/film clip in all it's
early 1980's glory)
D'ARCY: This band is brilliant. They're The Flaming Lips.
JAMES: I can vouch for that
D'ARCY: And if you don't know them you should
Flaming Lips - Turn it on
Flaming Lips - Bad Days
Neil Young - Harvest Moon
JAMES: This next song is by The Carpenters (Close To Me), actually it's by the, a Burt Backerack \ Hal David song, um and
D'ARCY: It's not by the Carpenters
JAMES: It's the Carpenters version
D'ARCY: They, they sing the song but they did not write it.
JAMES: But it is, I mean once she sings it its
D'ARCY: No one else can sing it once she sings it, that's why its the Carpenters.
The Carpenters - Close To Me
The Carpenters - Calling All Occupants
R.E.M. - South Central Rain
D'ARCY: Filter, toured with us in Europe, and um. You know they're not really like that good looking, but they're music is pretty good you know. You have to feel sorry for them sometimes, but they're music's pretty good and watch the video (Hey Man, Nice Shot).
JAMES: We pity them
D'ARCY: Yeah
JAMES: Um, one of the main reasons we pity them
D'ARCY: That's why we took 'em on tour, because we felt sorry for 'em.
JAMES: Ah, yeah, you know I don't even want
D'ARCY: These guys
JAMES: I don't, yeah its terrible, well ah, when you watch, I th. I. I can't find
D'ARCY: He can't even talk about it. Lets just turn the camera off.
JAMES: They're great guys
D'ARCY: Just go to the video
JAMES: No, we're sorry. Now we're sitting here, and, just play the video. Geez?.. No regrets
Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot
The Prodigy - Firestarter
(This is a real fuckup of a song. I mean the
film clip is real fucking spastic. Unbelievable)
JAMES: This, again
D'ARCY: I hate this band
JAMES: Would you. this song is great.
D'ARCY: I hate this band
JAMES: No, look, listen, it sounds great [laughs]
D'ARCY: She sounds like ohh, I hate this band
JAMES: Would you not attack my video choice, anyways
D'ARCY: Her voice is so annoying
JAMES: Listen, listen this is a great song
D'ARCY: They have good songs but her voice is so annoying. He picked this song just to spite me.
JAMES: I'm just gonna start swearing, so they won't be able to use this tape, so we'll have to go back to so stop. Um, this is the Blake babies with the song, Out There. Its a really great song, it's like 3 minute pop classic its like
D'ARCY: Classic ?
JAMES: Well I don't wanna say its classic 'cause
D'ARCY: It's not [laughs]
JAMES: Time hasn't told yet, whether its up there with ??? ??????.
Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You
Screaming Trees - Bed Of Roses
Primal Scream - Rocks (This band's shitty. They're a cheap rip off of the
Black Crowes.)
D'ARCY: I wish I could sing like Hope Sannibal(?). She has an amazing voice, and although quite crazy she's a very beautiful person and this a really beautiful video (Mazzy Star - Halah). This is one of my favorite songs, I think you'll like it too.
R.E.M. - Crush With Eyeliner
R.E.M. - Orange Crush
JAMES: [James sings] Every time I see you, I just want to put you down.
D'ARCY: Yeah me too
JAMES: Alright, this next video is by Elvis Costello. Um, Elvis, what can I say about him. He's a rockin' guy. I was in high school, and I didn't understand it at all, but I thought he rocked. This a great, dare I say classic ?
D'ARCY: You could say that.
JAMES: Classic, classic pop song, Accidents Will happen, and it's a really fun video there on the beach, he's got his Jaguar or Jazzmaster guitar and their traction's totally rock. Bring back the skinny ties and the horn rim glasses. [Holds up can of coke.]
Elvis Costello - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes
Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
The Only Ones - Another Gin, Another Planet
Teenage Fanclub - Sparky's Dream
JAMES: OK. This is a pretty cool song from, ah, not one of the Stones popular moments, but um, really cool song and the video's really spooky. They got like
D'ARCY: It's actually kind of goofy
JAMES: They got like wizard hats on and
D'ARCY: [laughs] They look ridiculous
JAMES: Indian war paint. They're for real in this video.
D'ARCY: [still laughing] It's a great song
JAMES: There's no doubt about it. And really cool guitar things
D'ARCY: And you've got to wonder, what were they on.
JAMES: They were on a lot of stuff
D'ARCY: [laughs] and they shouldn't have been
JAMES: Ah, yeah. I like the song a lot.
D'ARCY: The songs great. The video though.
JAMES: It's so lonely.
Led Zeppelin - Dazed & Confused
Jane's Addiction - Ain't No Right
D'ARCY: This, needs no introduction. This is Suicidal Tendencies. Institutionalized
JAMES: Why doesn't it need an introduction ?
D'ARCY: I know I said it doesn't but I gave it one anyway because, it deserves one whether it needs one or not, 'cause it's a great song from the soundtrack of a great movie, Repo Man.
JAMES: [mumbling] I never heard it.
D'ARCY: What ?
JAMES: I never even heard this song.
D'ARCY: Oh, you had to, I used to play it all the time.
JAMES: I wasn't listening
D'ARCY: Anyway. They had a very large influence on me, and um, hear the song, watch the video, watch the movie, ah.
JAMES: Rent the movie
D'ARCY: And don't watch it ?
JAMES: You can do what you want its a free society.
D'ARCY: hoh, and maybe even buy the soundtrack too.
Suicidal Tendencies - Possessed To Skate
Kyuss - Green Machine
Kyuss - One Inch Man
D'ARCY: This is probably the only video I own, it's got to be the = grooviest video ever made. And this is one of the grooviest bands that = ever, ever was. This is John Spencer Blues Explosion, Afro.
Bosshog - I Dig You
